Information about Fine Arts Education and Putnam City Schools
PC Fine Arts
The Fine Arts programs within Putnam City Schools is an integral part of the district's approach to diversified education centered on core curriculum. Music and Arts are core curriculum as defined by the State of Oklahoma and the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. All Putnam City arts programs are approached through rigorous arts education classes and integration of the arts within other academic disciplines.
Fine arts education instruction is provided by qualified, degreed fine arts educators working in collaboration with professional artists, arts organizations, and cultural and community institutions to bring the arts to students as participators and spectators.
Fine Arts Staffing
The district is one of just a couple statewide in which each school has degreed certified teachers in the arts in both areas of music and visual art. Arts disciplines such as drama and dance are taught by certified degreed arts teachers beginning in middle school and on into high school with integration existing at the elementary level.
Visual Arts Teachers
Putnam City Schools has on staff 34 certified and full-time visual arts teachers:
» One teacher is on staff at each of the district’s 18 elementary schools.
» One teacher is on staff at all of the district’s five middle schools, with the exception of one school that has two visual arts teachers.
» One high school has six visual art teachers on staff.
» One high school has five visual art teachers on staff.
» One high school has four visual art teachers on staff.
Music Teachers
Putnam City Schools has on staff 48 certified, fulltime music teachers:
» One teacher in general music is on staff at each of district’s elementary schools. Some of the strings teachers rotate between sites at the elementary schools.
» One teacher in instrumental music, one teacher in vocal music and one teacher in orchestra are on staff at all of the five middle schools.
» One teacher is on staff in vocal music and orchestra and two are on staff in instrumental music at each of the three high schools.
Coordinating Arts Education
Within the district there is one fine arts coordinator with seven arts discipline chairs. The total fine arts faculty district wide totals 96, an increase of 14 since 1994, within 26 schools and an alternative high school. They are known state and nationwide for fine arts education advocacy efforts, curriculum implementation and award winning programs.
A District Fine Arts Planning Team is also part of the educational structure. Each school site has a chairperson on the district team, which promotes the arts integration efforts and the artist-in residence program sponsored by the Oklahoma State Arts Council. The chairs also manage arts planning teams at their own schools.
